RESEARCH!

HE-MAN. In the 80's, I was getting
unpainted lumpy versions of these
in pink. Today I have to pay for them.
My 80s ones still stand up, this guy's
feet are nearly falling off 20 seconds
out of the box. So he does more,
and looks 100% awesome, but
can't stand up to the 80s OG.
Good thing I bought 3.
Unheard of in 1981.
( 2 max back then )

We've been working away
on our custom Kaiju.
The first batch will be
revealed at the big Giant
Robot show in LA come
end of October. But for
a rare chance at unpainted
awesomeness, do check out
TOY KARMA right around
the corner at Rotofugi
this September.
A Kaiju show like no other.
Oh and Mattel did good
with this kiddy Batmobile.
Makes up for He-Feet.

7/29/09

RHINO

The Target exclusive GI JOE Rhino
is 100% awesomeness. Done deal,
vehicle of the year until that Star Wars
giant tank things shows up at our Target.
This thing looks like Batman's tumbler
until you press a button on the top
and a giant helicopter jumps out.
Perfect for burying in the mud.

Oh and it's HUUUUUGE.
The neighbor with his Zune and
sports car gave me a HUGE look when
I was talking these pics....
So you know it rocks.
So once again, the better toys
are at Target. Come on guys,
step it up! U guys in Japan
and at Grasshut excluded.

MOTHMAN

This was our favorite find at SDCC.
A gift from Lev at Toy Tokyo.
Mothman! We have the Flatwoods
but we were missing this one big time.

Thanks Lev!!!

The rarest SDCC Uglydoll item, only
because nobody knew to go get it!
The Random House Sampler! It has
a few reprinted, reworked pages
from the Ugly Guides with a few
all new spreads of unused art.

DAIKAISHINKEN

Ice-Cream! This is the super hard to find
Ice-Cream truck from Transformers.
He breaks apart into 2 robots.
But Mina wanted to play Ice-Cream
delivery and my #1 rule in life is my
kids get to break all of my toys
no matter what, so off it goes!
Burry it in the mud!
But first I'll take a chocolate sprinkle
double whammy.

Daikaioh was released in Japan. Which means
here he is. This is an add on to Shinken-Oh,
the first robot from Shinkenger.
The neighbors were giving me a funny look
when I took pics of him in the yard.
If they could only see what's going on inside.

Anyway, when you combine the 2 robots,
you get what looks like a clunky kiddy toy.
The head is kinda big and the arms are
very short. Even the neighbors think so.
And I like it that way. Even has chrome!

That same voltrony face.

Thank you

Thank you! Thank you to everyone at sdcc. We had a great time and we hope u did too. And about that situation at the giant robot release? Now we know who, now we know what to do, and we can for sure say problem solved. I'll leave it at that. A huge x 10000 thanks to Eric, Martin , Michelle and the entire crew.

A tremendous roar if applause to Alita, Alex, Bobby, Jimmy, super Ben, and the entire ugly crew. You guys are the best and Sun-Min and I will never forget the heart and soul you put into everything you do. Bravo!!!!
We truly love you all.

Mattel, you guys really brought it. I picked up the entire He Man set all the way up to Hordak.
U rock.

Costume guys, I'm in awe.

SDCC DONE DEAL

I've got 2 of these on the way. Hot Toys
is #1. I've never seen a better action figure.
OK it's a doll. Perfecto! Hot Toys rules.
Today is the last day. I'm hoping only 20
people want pink Babo Kaiju so that
everyone is happy. I would make more
if I could. I figured better put them out
there than keep them to myself.
Sun-Min and I are growing our V-Color
collection and are both excited to
start the next phase: customs!

My main grab at SDCC was something
you can easily find on ebay but seeing
it in person really got me. It's a bootleg
of the bootleg first available in the 80s.

They even nailed the inner window cover thingy.
I had Golion by Ban Dai America, and
I had a single packed Matchbox version
of Black Lion, but I always wanted the
knock off LIONBOT and presto, he's back!

I picked up a few other nerdy things here
and there but trying to go home without
having to make 2 trips to the car this time.
I think being a daddy has flicked one of the
off switches in my need for toys. Perhaps
because there's far less void to fill?
Wait, no no that new Y Wing at the
Hasbro booth is a must and dude,
I need that red Energer Z! Ugh!
Oh and GI JOE guys.
And Owly.
Etc.

Oh and Kaiju.

But I'll take trips to the super market
over more toys any day.

HEROES

Made my year. Just met with Bwana, Le Merde, Gargamel, Martin Ontiveros, and Kiyoshi at the Grasshut section. We still feel shakey. I don't have the voice for crowds so I need to go back to absorb everything.
Best of show!

-- Post From My iPhone

BYE BYE COLORWAYS

Le Merde! This is the future we warned you about! When I saw these I nearly fell over in my chair. But here we go, and more to come!
First Dehara, then Koji, now Le Merde...it's like
I'm a kid in a candy store.

DAY 1

Here's the booth!
Up at 5am after a long first day
so we can get the Uglys on TV.
The morning after preview night,
the show floor floods with press.
It's a kinda surreal time when there's
nobody around and all is quiet and
relaxed, yet you're way too sleepy.

So far we're having a great time,
and happy to reconnect with many
nice people we've been too far away
from for so long.

7/22/09

That's boss!!!

Live updates all weekend from sdcc. This was the real surprise...a bossy bear made just for us! Amazing, I'm still in shock. Bossy's publisher, the Disney book group team, stopped by right after and got to see. Rad!!! Thank you!!!

PREVIEW NIGHT

Woah ok well preview night used to be slow. I've never seen a crowd like this. I hope everyone has fun. Sun-Min and Mina retired after an hour.

We are right in the center by Mattel, Hasbro
and Lucasfilm. Only, closer to the FOOD!
Please do stop by to say hi. Sun-Min,
Mina and I are going to hit the road

This time we're going to take our time
and smell the roses ( the Targets, Wal Marts
and ToysRus locations).
Wait, our both is RIGHT next to
TAMASHII NATIONS....Mazinger!

UGLY SDCC 2009

UPDATE: Pink Babo Kaiju edition of 20 available
SUNDAY ONLY at the SDCC giant robot booth,
starting at 11am.

Met up with Super Ben at Big Lou's today
to find the good stuff missing. Aha!
It's on it's way down to SDCC.
Our team is starting to fly out now
and we drive down Monday. Before
that I have to pick up the new shirts
we made with Mighty Fine just for
this event.

There have been many questions so I
will reply here and if there's others
I will update in the comments section
as the posts continue in there.
The big question seems to be: Will
all items be available on Preview Night?
Yes indeed! I can't confirm but I hear this
is the first year preview night is open to
the public, meaning it's sort of treated
as any other day? I could be wrong.
I bet I am.

UGLY BOARD BOOKS ARE OUT!
Not sure if we have ours in yet,
so not sure if they will be at SDCC.
Other question which we see the most is:
How many jackets are being sold?
We made 2 or 3 in each size for our team
but magically only needed 1 or 2 of each,
so we decided to make 1 or 2 of each
size left available at SDCC. They will be
for sale. I think they go for $375.00

Pink Babo Kaiju was actually produced
first as a test in Japan back last year.
There were only 20 made and those
can be found at the Giant Robot booth.
He is the very last production version
Ugly Kaiju ever. So sad it's over, yet so
happy for what's around the corner.
Customs! September and October.
Our GLOW IN THE DARK ice-bat figures
will be there preview night on, until
they run out. Should be enough
to last the show I'm sure.
Same for First Mate Trunko,
our special plush Ugly.
Last year the special plush
sold out in one day so now we are
ready with pretty fair purchase limits, etc.
Last year it was free for all time.
Mules should have no trouble though.
Scalpers will though. See, if I see them
on ebay while the show is running, I make
that many more. Nice!

All new Bossy Bear goodies like crazy at SDCC.
More news soon. Singing times are up on the
previous post down there.
I stole this photo because even
I don't have packaged versions yet.

YO JOE! That's what I'm after at SDCC.
Urban Vinylz? Not for me! Hasbro has
brought it. OK so I'm after GI JOE movie
toys and Gargamel. OK lots of it.
Anyone know who will have the
waves not out yet at retail?
That's what I want to know.
And knowing is half the battle.
Your wallet is the other half.

Now for the most important part.
See YOU there! This is our 7th SDCC
with the UGLY booth, and we're 7x
more excited to connect with
everyone. I hope all show goers
have a fantastic time. I feel kinda
lame posting stuff to buy all day
long but we truly appreciate the
level of enthusiasm everyone has
shown when it comes to the silly
things we make. I'm personally
the most excited about the 2 board
books ( with the 3rd not far behind.)
We had a lot of fun making those
especially, and we hope you like 'em.
Anyhow, thanks for so many years
of joy. We will do our best to do better.
As long as there's one of you left out
there, we'll have a table set up
to make something for you.

SEE U AT SDCC!!!

We're leaving early for San Diego so
most updates will be made on our
facebook page from now through
July 26th. Easier from the phone etc.
The above is a small one of a kind
version of our internal use Ugly
letterman jacket. We made a couple
in each size and decided to make
one of each size available at our
SDCC booth. See you there!

Released at the show:
Ugly internal company jackets (Ugly booth)
Sailor Trunko (Ugly booth)
Glow in the Dark Ice-Bat action figures (Ugly booth)
Special run tee shirts by Mighty Fine (Ugly booth)
Babo Kaiju Giant Robot exclusive (Giant Robot booth) 20 pcs made
Glow Crocadoca blanks (Toy Tokyo booth)
Mimobot (Mimobot booth)

Our signings schedule:
UGLY BOOTH: every day
Toy Tokyo booth Saturday from 12 noon to 1PM
Mimobot booth Saturday 5:30 PM
Giant Robot booth Sunday 11AM

STAR TOY

They don't make em like they used to.
No, they make em much better than
that. I recently overheard a heated debate about
"urban vinyl" and "designer toys" VS Japanese
Kaiju. That's like comparing Apples and Die Cast Metal.
They have nothing to do with each other at all,
but somehow poor Kaiju got wrapped up in that.
I stayed out of it but I really wanted to throw my
2 cents. To be honest, the high quality stuff is
at Wal Mart. Sorry, it's true. If you're in Japan,
sure...the best stuff is everywhere, but most of
that very best is "mass market"... produced
by Ban Dai and Takara. I dare the "urban vinyl scene" to
come close to the superior quality found in
toys made by Mattel or Hasbro, Brio, Playmobil,
Schylling, Medicom or Littletikes.
I dare the "urban vinyl scene" to drop the "scene"
part and get with it. I mean come on, Wal Mart's
toy section is cleaning your clock. Beat down!
At the same time, I applaud Gargamel, Le Merde,
Dehara and many others for truly bringing it.
Those aren't "urban vinylz" though.
Check them out at SDCC. My first stop will
be the Gargamel booth. I feel like a kid in
1980 in line for the first showing of Empire
Stikes Back.
Oh and that's a recent pic of Star Toys.
That's where I used to buy Star Wars figures
back in 1979. They're still doing it, and
doing just fine, surrounded by the big box
mega super empires.

Grand master

Today we are hanging with grand master Han.
He was 4th in the 2008 tea kwon do championships. Time for some real Korean food in Hacienda heights. And if you want the best self defense lessons in the neighborhood call up TAO martial arts.
Me? I just run away. I'm super fast.

Boston

Well we thought we were headed to Korea but now we're off to Boston to meet with a company with an incredible history about a new toy line. Hey and I found the sleepy Mickey my mother designed in the 80s.

See these clouds? I'm told these are earthquake clouds. I say no such thing (crosses fingers)

G.I. WOAH!

Dude! Storm Shadow! I got the masked
one too but what's with this glam one?
I love it when Target breaks stree dates
on toys and I am standing around the
moment they do. The box says NOT
BEFORE JULY 10th! I was sure the
computer register thingy would stop
me but I got away with no bruises!
I'm not so into GI Joe but as a kid I
was nuts about the very few I had.
Cobra Ninja, Snake Eyes, a snow
guy, and cobra commander.
I left the rest behind, cuz I don't
connect with them the same way.
Deep huh.

You want trench coat snake eyes?

NO DISNEY

The Disneyland signing is a no go.
Something went wrong, not sure what?
I've been running the show from my
phone since May so it may all be
my bad. But we will be at SDCC
for sure, and I will post signing
times asap. After SDCC I go to
sign at our Singapore Comic Con
booth every day! Can't wait!

Mazinger! Our new home will have
little to no toys this time. My office
will have Muteki Shogun and all
kakuranger on the shelves, final
forms from Shinkenger and Hurricanger
on the floor, and Mazinger GX-45
on my desk. That's IT!
OK so 5 of GX-45 on the desk.
Many modes and hands.
OK 10.

You can find this guy at Anime Jungle
located in downtown Little Tokyo
in LA. I highly recommend.
If you like high quality die cast metal
that is. Make sure it's # GX-45!
Here's a google shopping search link.
I recommend it THAT much.
HERE CLICKY CLICK.
OR CLICK FOR AMAZON.COM
See that lantern back there? I found it
in the tool shed of our Venice Ca home
when I was in high school. I restored it
and painted it green. Cuz, you know,
Green Lantern!
Nerdy huh.
Uh but when I moved out my mom
painted it dark green. It was
realllly bright green.
Oh well.

UGLY KOKESHI WORM

If you are in LA this weekend be sure to
check out KOKESHI: from folk at to art toy
at the Japanese American National Museum
this weekend. Sun-Min has 2 pieces in the
show. We've seen a few of the others and
WOW, worth going for sure.
Not clear if the pieces are for sale.
I don't think they are? Not sure.
It says 100 will be for sale in the
museum store, so not sure if Sun-Min's
are in the galley or in the store for sale.

7/6/09

GX-45

We're talking HEAVY die cast metal here.
OK, if you have a spare $65.00,
do NOT go to the movies this weekend.
Really, no no. Don't go. Instead, buy
the Soul of Chogokin Mazinger Z Shin
GX-45. It's incredible. Maybe the
best toy ever produced, ever?
I dare you to find better.
Purple Pie man mint in box
by Kenner? Ok ok...
But come on, for realz.

TAIPEI TOY FESTIVAL

Check out the new Bossy Bear items
at the Taipei Toy Festival, booth #B53-54!
Most of these guys will be at SDCC in
San Diego as well, but not sure if there
will be any yellow editions left.
July 9th - the 12th!

BACK TO SCHOOL

The Uglydoll School Planner is out now!
The nice folks at Chronicle books let
us do whatever we wanted, so we did.
Stickers included! The stickers are
really awesome. You can tear out
the front page so it doesn't say
"school planner" under the see-thru
plastic cover, if you want.

or check it out at a nice neighborhood
store near you.

GOING DOWN?

OK I am officially plugged into all

probably means nobody uses them

coming out soon, so we will use these

Woah was that an earthquake?
Garbage truck? We're staying in
a very 80s hotel out near the
beach. It's the only place with
a kitchen. Will it hold up?
Not if the garbage truck is full.

Woah! First blog post from iPhone. Perhaps this isn't the beSt way to post. Feels like I'm letting you down. Still, ok for emergencies. Right? This whole mobile tech thing is making me feel funny.
Twitter, facebook, blogger, YouTube and flickr...stay connected! Although if I stay connected to you guys , it's a good thing. Nice knowing there's good people on the other side. Ok so anyway my YouTube name is davidugly. I'll make it funny. Sometimes. Will use for toy project updates.

KAIJU

We've been getting emails asking
where this or that Kaiju might be
available as they are all sold out on
our own site. While they may or may not
be found online these days, Giant Robot
still has some in the case. We took a
look last night and this is what we saw.
That blue Chupacabra is super rare...
we only made a couple. Less than the
50 the edition was supposed to be.

Giant Robot will have a huge show in LA
at the JANM this October and we're
working on a few new pieces for that
one alongside 2 of our favorite artists.
Mostly based on the new Kaiju sculpt
we are making with Intheyellow, but
we'll have a few others too.
That's going to be a major event
here in LA, downtown Little Tokyo.
We'll do our best to make our
contribution worthy. WIll be
really great I'm sure.
OK but what's the opening
date!? I'll post soon.

7/3/09

3X MORE BOSSY

Yes indeed we are working on the 3rd
Bossy Bear book today. But wait, there's
more. Look for a nice surprise at the
Taipei toy festival with news and
info to follow by the 14th.
Then later in the year, sure enough,
you will be able to wear Bossy Bear.
Bossy Bling? We'll see!
Do kids still say bling?
I know old people like
me do.

7/2/09

INSPECTOR GADGET

We had our house inspection today.
That's the first and last "new home"
post I'll make. We wont make this
into gigabytes of dry wall pics with
and without flash. You know the kind.
This is my office and Sun-Min's
office is next door. Why have 2?
Hey not only that, we're going to
have a room you can only enter
if you sign an NDA! It's hi-tech!
And empty for now.

There's a Target down the street
so I will have to show plenty of
restraint. Or some.
Signing at Disneyland with BOTH
myself and Sun-Min on July 18th.
More news soon, but seems very
rare that we can both make it somewhere
together.

7/1/09

FONY FAKESTATION

We had Curry Hurry with Eric today
and I finally got to pass on the
Hotwheels I'd been saving for him
since sometime late last year or so?
I kept leaving it in my car.
Apparently it's a super rare one!
Mina had a great time with Eric
and his friend Ayako.
So did we! Sun-Min and I have
been consumed with house hunting
so it's nice to take a short rest and
sit down with nice people.
I stole his Lego catalog by accident.
Awesome pictures.
Death Star!

There's been some confusion out there.
This is not Littlebony.
Thank you for the emails, but
we did not make this.
Some other big company did.
Not us.
